Ashley, Tina and Eric at BCAF!
Sure, we’ve all heard of fencing, but do you really know what it all entails? I thought I did, but boy was I pleasantly surprised! This past week the Bucks Happening team visited the Bucks County Academy of Fencing located just over the river in Lambertville, NJ. So why is it called Bucks County Academy of Fencing (BCAF) if it is not in Bucks County? Well, BCAF was originally opened in New Hope in 1981 but moved to a much larger facility in 2003. Since then, BCAF has become the largest privately owned fencing academy on the east coast.
The academy offers a wide variety of levels from beginners to competition training programs. With over 200 students BCAF continues to provide a program of group and individual training, paired exercises, footwork/conditioning sessions and practice bouting. Fencing classes are open to anyone ages eight through adulthood. BCAF even has students over the age of 70! This is a great sport for all ages and does not take as much as a toll on your body compared to physical contact sports. Fencing not only strengthens your fitness abilities but also your self-discipline and mental agility.
In my brief 23 years of life on this beautiful planet, I have made three generally poor assumptions; 1: women will flock to me because I think they will 2. Employers will jump at the chance to have me even though they don’t know me, and 3. I’m extraordinarily good looking. Yes, I have fooled some with my charm and unenviable perseverance, but the truth of the matter is no man is safe behind the merit of his words. What really resonates in the ear of “I’m out of your league” ladies, “you’re a bit under-qualified” employers, and even your own wishful thinking has always been a clean haircut. Yes, a haircut. You may say to yourself, “I like my haircuts. They do a good job”. At first glance this may be true, but the overall experience when getting a cut can make a world of difference. John’s Barber Shop in Newtown, PA makes that world of difference.
Not many people think about their clothing every time they step outside and its lack of protection from the sun. One Yardley resident, Colleen Dougherty Bronstein, wanted to change this after she was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 1999. Immediately after this life changing diagnosis she came up with the idea of Sun Threadz, clothing made from 50+ UPF protection. These clothes promote sun protection and allow people to enjoy the outdoors without the worry of developing melanoma. (more…)
Locally grown food has been an important subject for quite sometime now. Its not only important to support local business, but also it is important to create meals that keep your health in mind. Vincent Peterson, head chef of the vegan/vegetarian style cafe, has built a menu using locally grown products, is health conscious, and would never dare lose out on taste. Kindle, according to Peterson, comes from the ancient Indian science of well-being, called Ayurveda. In Ayurveda, one’s health depends largely on your Agni, or “digestive fire”. Not only is Kindle a ‘roving restaurant’, but now offers cooking classes and workshops. In our interview with Chef Vincent Peterson, he tells us a little bit about himself, his restaurant, and his travels. To learn more, visit Kindle Cafe! (more…)

Many Bucks County residents have been to Shady Brook Farm for their popular seasonal events, such as the haunted hayride or holiday light show, but we recently discovered that there is a great reason to visit the Yardley farm on a regular basis- the Shady Brook Market.

It was April, and, it seemed, that every single flower had bloomed during the exact same week. Pollen covered every car, and I was a cranky b*tch because my allergies we keeping me up at night. During the day, my eyes were swelling shut, and I was miserable! I should be accustomed to allergies, I’ve had them for as long as I can remember, but something HAD to be done. (more…)
