Bucks Happening this week?

Though the weather can’t decide if it’s summer or fall, we have gathered a great list of happenings to enjoy in a variety of climates. We picked a few inside and a few outside – who knows what mother nature will call for? In addition to this list, check out our Fall Guide and calendar for all the events happening throughout the season.

Ajiri Tea – Helping the World, One Tea Cup at a Time

Fall has officially arrived and with it comes a rise in the consumption of hot drinks to warm up in the colder weather.  Therefore, I thought it appropriate to spotlight Bucks County resident, Sara Holby, who has put one of the most popular hot beverages worldwide, to use for the greater good.  I sat down with Sara to find out more about the tea and her non-profit company.

The entire adventure began while studying abroad and working for an NGO in Kenya.  Sara realized that there were still many people struggling to survive, even as we move further and further in to the 21st century.  She saw the organization for which she was working go from supporting a few 100 people (as they had been doing for about 8 years), to not being able to support anyone at all.  Ultimately, they were forced to shut down.   Sara witnessed firsthand how greatly this affected the small community and was determined to do something about it. Save the tatas!

October is all about pumpkins and Halloween but it also is the time to think pink for Breast Cancer Awareness month. It is easy to show support by simply wearing pink throughout the month. The Eagles were seen this past Sunday sporting their pink gloves and cleats. (Of course, it is also red October for the Phillies!)

So many number people have been affected by this disease one way or another. Luckily, though, there are a variety of ways to support the cause in our own community & help in the continuing fight against breast cancer. Since this month marks the official Breast Cancer Awareness month, Bucks Happening put together a guide including events, support groups, and general information about breast cancer. So many great events are happening throughout Bucks County so you can help support the cause!

Recently, Bucks & Montgomery Living Magazine’s Director of Operations Karen Lavery,  lost her beloved son Danny. Danny was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at the young age of 15. Karen, who we have come to know as one of the most inspiring, energetic, and creative people we know, has made the decision to grieve for her son in one of the most inspiring ways that she can think of.  Along with a half million other walkers from across the country, Karen will be taking part in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International’s Walk to Cure Diabetes in Philadelphia on October 24th, as they try to reach their goal of raising $90 million.  But even further, Karen has organized a team of walkers who are calling themselves the Dash for Danny. So far, Karen has enlisted 100 walkers to help her commemorate her son and to raise awareness for this very serious disease.  Please visit Karen Lavery’s “Dash for Danny” website here to see her progress, donate online, join the team and see how close she is to reaching her personal goal.

Preserving History with the Plumstead Historical Society

Painting by Lyn Dimmig

I have always believed in trying to preserve the past by saving what you can of historical assets. Many old and historical buildings and farms that use to dot the Bucks County Landscape are slowly disappearing to make way for large developments. Once these places are gone they can never be replaced and that part of our history is lost forever. If we could start to save just one historical site at a time we might be able to hold on to what is left of the past.

The Plumstead Historical Society was founded in 2006 by a group of Plumstead citizens who wanted to preserve the rich heritage of the Plumstead Township area.  Plumstead Township is a small community of about 11,000 people just outside of Doylestown. (more…)

Share the fall bounty with those in need

Drop off donations to G2 Computers in Washington Crossing

Penndel Food Pantry provides food for 1,800 – 2,000 individuals each month – approximately 44% of whom are children.  Surrounded by the bounty of Bucks County, it’s sometimes hard to believe that 14 million (about 19%) of children in the U.S. live in poverty and 14% are considered undernourished.  We can all do something to help, and G2 Computers in Washington Crossing has made our role simple by organizing a food drive and generously offering to match all donations. Please help PFP keep the pantry shelves stocked for those in need by droping off food or monetary donations at G2 Computeres through September 30th.  (more…)

Photo recap: Barley Sheaf Garden Party

Here are some pictures of the delicious evening we had at Barley Sheaf with the Heritage Conservancy. Our favorite part: food and beverage pairings as passed hors d’oeuvres! A spicy tomato martini paired with a cool, soothing vichyssoise, Sly Fox pale ale paired with braised beef crostini, duck paired with champagne, and more!! This Great Gastby-esque cocktail hour was followed by a beautiful 3 course sit down dinner. This ENTIRE EVENT was donated by the wonderful people at Barley Sheaf, and 100% of the proceeds benefit Heritage Conservancy.
