The most recent opening, the Wrightstown Farmers’ Market, officially began its season on May 5th. The market runs every Saturday 9am-1pm until November 17th adjacent to the township building at 2203 2nd Street Pike in Wrightstown. According to the their website, they features over 25 vendors offering an impressive assortment of products:

seasonal, freshly harvested, organically and conventionally grown vegetables, herbs, flowers; preserved products; 100% grass-fed beef, pasture-raised poultry, lamb and pork; pastured, free range eggs; organic yogurt and cheeses; artisanal breads and homemade baked goods; handmade soaps and lotions; raw local honey and beeswax candles; locally grown and handmade fiber products; gluten free and vegan items; organic, fair trade, locally roasted coffees; organic, freshly ground nut butters; gourmet prepared foods and local handcrafts.

In addition to these products, the market offers live music, educational activities, and cooking demonstrations. For the price of admission (free), we’re thinking it sounds like a pretty good option for some of those sunny Saturday mornings.

The Wrightstown Market is put on the by the Bucks County Foodshed Alliance. They host a number of area markets, including the recently-opened (and indoor) Stockton Market. If you’re interested in finding a market in your neighborhood, we’ve listed the others below. If you know of one we haven’t listed here, please let us know in the comments and we’ll add it to the list!

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s A Grand Night for Singing

July 2nd – July 22nd

The season will launch with A Grand Night for Singing by Rodgers and Hammerstein, directed by Tony® Award nominee and Emmy Award® winning Lonny Price. From “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” to “Some Enchanted Evening,” this 1993 Tony® Award-nominated musical revue features over 30 of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s greatest hits.

Ted Chapin, President and Executive Director of The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization had great things to say about our area: “Bucks County was such an important place in the life of Oscar Hammerstein II. In Highland Farm he had a retreat where he did much of his creative work. The fact that a Rodgers & Hammerstein show – and one that celebrates the whole collaboration – is reopening the legendary Bucks County Playhouse is a thrill to us all.”

The Playhouse also announced that on Thursday, July 5th there will be a Gala Performance of A Grand Night for Singing. Proceeds from the gala will support the continued restoration of the Playhouse.

A pre-show cocktail party will be held at Martine’s RiverHouse Restaurant (14 East Ferry Street) and a post-show reception at Marsha Brown (15 South Main Street). All information can be found on the Bucks County Playhouse website.

Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park

August 7th – August 26th

The second summer show will be Barefoot in the Park by Neil Simon. It was first seen on the Bucks County Playhouse stage nearly 50 years ago (prior to its original 1963 Broadway run). It is an iconic and beloved play about the trials and tribulations of two newlyweds on the top floor of a New York brownstone. From what we’ve heard, this show will treat its audience to a night full of laughter. Barefoot in the Park will be directed by Tony® Award nominee Sheryl Kaller (2010’s Tony® Award-nominated new play, Next Fall).

When asked about the showing, Neil Simon had this to say: “I am so delighted that the Bucks County Playhouse, such an important place in my creative life, will be up and running again. For it to feature, in its renaissance season, one of my own plays is icing on the cake.”

December Performances

December 4th – December 30th

The third production of 2012 will run from Tuesday, December 4 through Sunday, December 30. Full details for this holiday production are forthcoming.

Jed Bernstein commented that, “In planning the 2012 launch, we wanted to accomplish three very important goals: return live music to our stage, return to the Bucks County Playhouse legacy of producing plays, and raise the quality of the performers and performances. These two productions allow us to accomplish that, as does our return to an Actors’ Equity contract.”

Cabaret Performances

July 19th – July 21st and August 16th – August 18th

In addition to its summer and holiday productions, the Bucks County Playhouse will present a cabaret series Thursday, July 19 – Saturday, July 21 at 11:00 pm, and Thursday, August 16 – Saturday, August 18 at 11:00 pm at Havana Restaurant & Bar (105 South Main Street). December dates will be announced soon. Playhouse cast members will step outside of their traditional roles to perform in a 45-minute cabaret style show. The July edition will be hosted by award winning playwright and long time Bucks resident, Christopher Durang.

Want to Get Tickets?

Tickets are on sale now for the Playhouse’s 2012 season and the easiest way to get them is by visiting the Bucks County Playhouse website or calling 215-315-7788. Subscriptions and single tickets are available. Members will be eligible for additional savings!

If you’ve been following along with our Photos Of The Week at Bucks Happening, you may have noticed the recurring photography of JC Sager, a local photographer with a love for dogs. His passion for photography is matched only by his passion for canines. He owns Bucks County Dog Walks in Yardley. According to BCDW’s website, they have a simple goal: to supply the most personal care and attention to their clients and their clients’ four legged friends. We recently sat down to talk with JC about his work with photography and dogs. After speaking with JC, we definitely think they’re reaching their goal.

BH: JC, What made you decide to turn your passion for dogs into a business?

JC: When the idea to start my own pet service came to me, I was as far away from working with dogs as one could imagine. I was working with my Dad, doing custom cabinetry as a means to pay the bills and get by. As much as I respect the trade, my heart just wasn’t in it. Growing up, I had worked just about every job there is to have in the canine world. Training and grooming, pet stores to vet offices, kennels and doggy day care, not to mention hours of volunteer work at the PSPCA. In my heart I was always happiest when I was in a dogs company, and since I could remember, I’ve always understood them in a different way than most. In much the same way, they have always understood me. So I worked up the courage to leave my Dad’s shop one day in 2010, and started this specialized service that caters to our best friends. I knew in my heart that they needed me as much as I needed them, and that if I could give them the personal attention they deserve each day, that everyone would benefit.

BH: That is awesome. We are (obviously) huge fans of getting out there and pursuing your passions. Do you find a lot of people in Bucks County are looking for what your business has to offer?

JC: As a dog owner myself, I found it incredibly hard to find the kind of care and service that we offer here anywhere else in the area. From what I’ve seen and experienced, people in Bucks County are just looking for someone they can trust with their “kids”. Someone who will give them the same kind of attention and affection that they get from their owners. To have some piece of mind while they are putting in longer hours at work, or on vacation. Knowing that their dog is at home getting the chance to, well, be a dog!

BH: I can believe that. Dogs are a very important part of the family for most people. So, how exactly does your business work? Do people take their dogs to you or do you go to the dogs?

JC: We make visits to separate homes and care for our customers pets in any way they might need. Whether it be feeding, walking, cleaning, or training, we are here to help. With new clients, we always start with an initial ”meet & greet” before care begins. This gives our customers the chance to see how we are with their pets first hand, and to be as comfortable as possible with leaving them in our care. Each visit we make there after is a half hour of attention never a minute less, and every dog has their own personal journal describing the details of our time together.

For the pups that need socialization, I bring my own best friend Riley with me. He’s become a bit of an ambassador over the years, and is great with not just dogs, but all animals. I believe that their ability to help each other far outreaches what we ourselves can do sometimes. That being said, he has helped a countless number of dogs become more well balanced members of their respected families. That is just one example of the lengths we go to in order to ensure that your dog is getting the specific attention they deserve. Bucks County Dog Walks is an alternative to boarding and/or kennels as well. Why take them somewhere when they can stay at home and be comfortable in their usual surroundings? Why stress over wondering if ”Sammy” is feeling sad because he’s alone all day, or if “Murphy” is eating the couch because he’s bored and frustrated while you’re at work. Our passion for dogs, cats, and animals alike, make us love what we do every day.

BH: Absolutely! Do you have any plans to expand the business? How many people are currently involved?

JC: My dream when I started this was to give as many of our four legged friends the love that they so willingly give us. To expand throughout Bucks County is the immediate goal, and thanks to so many wonderful people and pets, we are achieving that. As time passes, I would love for this service to expand to surrounding counties, and continue to do so over the years. As of right now, I have two employees that do an unbelievable job in helping me get all of these pups lots of love. Their names are Aaron and Jen, and both are equally as passionate for what they do, and were hired based solely on the fact that I would trust them with my pooch any day of the week.

BH: It’s great to have a team you can trust. I have to ask: as someone who is dealing with animals every day, have you ever gotten yourself into a dangerous situation? What’s the toughest situation you have been in with a dog? What did you learn from that situation?

JC: The toughest situation I’ve ever been in with a dog was with one of my current clients. His name is Cash, and he is a red nose pit-bull. He was a rescue, and judging from the scars he was most definitely abused or used to fight as a young pup. He had a troubled past before finding the best home he could ever ask for, and the best owner. He was still on probation with the state of New Jersey for biting when I first met him. A young boy had waved a fishing pole in his face one day, and Cash lunged. The owner felt horrible, and tried every trainer available to correct his behavioral issues, and his aggression, but no one would even give him a second chance. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t condone a dog biting anyone, ever! However, I think sometimes we are unusually quick to judge, or label. Especially when it comes to pit-bulls. So knowing all this, I went to go and meet Mr. Cash and his ever playful sister Visa, about a year ago.

The meet and greet went better than I could have imagined, Cash was licking my face half the time and I saw not a single sign of aggression. A couple of days after our meet and greet was my first one on one visit with them. As I unlocked the door, Cash hopped up from his bed to come greet me. I only cracked the door enough to let my scent get in, because dogs use their nose like we use our eyes. But before I could think twice he squeezed his nose into the crack and then nudged his head through until he was close enough to bite me right on the thigh. I jumped back and slammed the door. He had not bitten me hard enough to puncture, but it definitely woke me up to say the least. Immediately I called to tell the owner, and then brainstormed all night as to what I had done wrong. It wasn’t Cash’s fault in the least bit, his master was not home, and he was protecting the house….like he should! For a week, I went back to the house on my own personal time. With each visit I did the same thing, only making sure he could not nudge it open this time. As I looked through the windows on the door, I noticed that he was getting more and more comfortable by his posture and body language.

On the fifth day, he was laying on the floor with a bone in his mouth. As I cracked the door, he dropped the bone immediately. The ears went back, the tongue came out, and he didn’t charge the door, but gently walked over. I knew by what he was showing me, and more importantly by the energy he was giving me, that today was the day. I swung the door open and Cash came trotting right over to lick my hand. That was about a year ago today, and Cash is now one of the sweetest dogs I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I knew from the first time we met that he and most other pit-bulls I know, they were just misunderstood. It was my mistake to walk into his home before I knew he was completely comfortable. It was my lack of judgement in assuming that just because he was happy go lucky while his owner was there, that he would be the same without her. I learned that I needed to be patient with him, and that if I didn’t give up on him like everyone else had, that he would not give up on me. I think sometimes we tend to blame not just pit-bulls but all dogs for behavioral issues, when in fact they might be a result of something we are, or are not doing as owners. It’s so much easier to say, “he’s a bad dog, he can’t be trusted”. But the real work to me is taking the time to understand why they do the things they do. I will forever grateful to Cash, and to all dogs for that matter. Because in trying to understand them, I am given the opportunity to more clearly understand myself.

BH: That is incredible. It must have been so rewarding to have such a clear breakthrough with one of your ‘clients.’ What’s your favorite part about running BCDW?

JC: My favorite part of running this service is of course the time that I get to spend with the dogs each day. Watching them fetching balls and chasing frisbees. Seeing the smiles on their faces as they realize that this whole field we drove to is for them to run in! There’s nothing I love more though, than watching them enjoy the simple things in life. After all it’s what they do best! To see how happy it makes them to run on a sunny day, to dig in snow or roll in the grass. They have so much appreciation for even just a half hour of exercise and attention. I will forever admire them for their simplicity, and for helping me realize how much I take for granted sometimes. Seeing them live in the moment everyday, not worrying about the future or regretting the past. Seeing that makes me excited to go to work everyday, and I always make sure the owners get lots of photographs so that they can see the same!

BH: I’m sure you are caring for dogs all over the area, but where do you typically take them and what types of activities do you do with them?

JC: We get to visit lots of different parks during the day. There is Tyler, Washington’s Crossing, and Core Creek Parks just to name a few! If the client doesn’t happen to live close to a park or open field, we find a way to keep them seeing new sights and sounds, like switching the routes we take as often as possible. On nicer days I have some clients who pull me while I’m on my rollerblades, especially the high energy dogs that need a job to do. Then there are some who prefer going to the baseball fields where they can run and chase tennis balls. There are even some pups who could care less about where they go, as long as there are new things to smell (Beagles). I maintain the philosophy that taking your dog to new places only builds a stronger relationship, and more trust between the dog and the handler. All my clients dogs know their backyards all too well, so I enjoy giving them the chance to explore new environments as often as possible.

BH: Well, I’m sure people will be interested in contacting you after hearing about Bucks County Dog Walks. How can we reach BCDW?

JC: Anyone who might be interested in our services can visit us at www.bcdogwalks.com for more information. Our office is located in Yardley Borough and we are always open. You can also check out our weekly updates, quotes, and pictures on our Facebook page!

What’s it like being a single, twenty-something, gal dating in Bucks County? Follow Single in the Suburbs as she takes us on her dating (mis)adventures! For more fun in between articles, follow her on Twitter.

There are few things that bring people together like music. Some of my best memories in high school are of going to shows and creating memories with new friends. The shared love of a band is a great icebreaker.

When I finally entered my twenties, a whole new world opened up to me as I became eligible to see live music at local bars and clubs. Going to see a band is one of my favorite activities and it breaks up the routine of just ‘bar hopping’ every weekend. You never know what the night will bring, but no matter what, it’s always fun and entertaining! It’s great to follow bands around the area, because you start seeing familiar faces and building connections just by going to shows. I’ve created some great relationships over the years by meeting other fans at live events.

A while back I started following a local band called The Lawsuits. I love their music, and have used their shows as an opportunity to visit the many corners of Bucks County. Alas, they are now packing the house in Philadelphia and my best kept secret won’t be a secret for much longer – but in the process, I have seen many new Bucks County venues. Each one has a unique feel, and for your reading pleasure, I have listed my top four below:

John & Peters, New Hope: A music lover’s dream, this bar hosts live music 365 nights a year. Bands enjoy playing here for the loyal crowds and opportunity to showcase their work on a stage that other successful bands have played before them, most notably local legends Ween, who got their start here. One of the only bars to allow smoking inside, if you can tough it out, you will be rewarded with an unpretentious atmosphere that is genuinely devoted to supporting local talent.

Puck, Doylestown: Known for their outside bar with a big screen to catch the big game, downstairs lies a full bar and stage. Known for their open mic night each Wednesday, often the talent comes back to headline their own night at the club.

MOMs, Doylestown: Upstairs at MOMs feels more like you’re in your friend’s living room than a bar. It’s that intimate setting that gives audiences an opportunity to connect with the music and get close to the artists. MOMs is host to Craft Culture, live music each Thursday and Saturday night where audiences can enjoy an eclectic mix of local music while sampling the craft beer selection.

Triumph Brewing Company, New Hope: One of the larger stages in the area, Triumph draws big crowds when they feature anything from Led Zepplin cover bands to singer/songwriters. You can listen to music while enjoying some friendly competition over at the pool tables or dart boards (all while sipping on their house brewed beer). This location has become a favorite, because it makes it so easy to meet new people and interact with others.

My favorite part about catching a band at one of these smaller locations is the opportunity to meet the musicians. It’s always fun to go up to the cute singer at the end of the show, compliment him on a job well done, and strike up conversation. (Free advice time: It’s a relatively well known fact that putting a guy on stage with an instrument makes him instantly more attractive, and every girl swoons over a rock star). It’s also a great way to meet guys that I would not have otherwise met at happy hour – making plans to see live music with a friend is a great excuse to see a new crush. As fellow music fans know, if you bond over the music, it often leads to deeper connections! If you want to meet new people, start by checking out your town’s live shows – they often bring people from surrounding areas together. It’s also an easy way to grow your little black book (read: iPhone contacts) while still enjoying your favorite local hot spots. In the end, my love for music has exposed me to some excellent local acts, helped to expand my social circle, and even given me a few new dating prospects. Three birds, one fantastic stone!

Mike and The Eye Shoppe have partnered together for the release of “The Situation” Limited Edition Sunglasses by The Eye Shoppe. The first release is called The Origination and will debut Saturday May 12th, 2012 at The Eye Shoppe’s New Hope Location. The launch party will run from 5-8pm. According to our sources, this event will be hosted by none other than Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino and Jared Buchansky from The Eye Shoppe.

According to The Eye Shoppe, the glasses (aptly named The Origination) are inspired by the Classic Retro Modified Aviator of the 1970′s. They represent the reinvention of a classic. The glasses are constructed of plastic acetate and nickel free alloy metal. The lens offer complete UV Protection from UV A, B and C. And, most importantly, the glasses were designed by ‘The Situation.’ If you are interested in grabbing a set of the limited edition shades, we’d recommend heading over to the launch party on because their will only be 400 of the glasses made. We’re guessing they will go quickly. Each pair comes with a case, cloth, certificate of authenticity as well as a gift box. Each sunglass is Rx’able and numbered.
