As fans of great architecture, we are always excited to check out local designers. Bucks County has an amazing variety of great homes and gardens. If you’ve lived here for any number of years, you may have heard about something called the Bucks County Designer House & Gardens. Interested in architecture or interior/landscape design? — You will definitely want to know more about this great initiative! (We went to the Designer House last year and it was absolutely incredible.)
The Bucks County Designer House & Gardens is a non-profit fundraiser run by Village Improvement Association of Doylestown (V.I.A) to support the Doylestown Hospital and V.I.A. Community Projects (According to their website, the V.I.A. is the only women’s club in the country to own and operate a community hospital). The first Designer House was shown in 1971, and the event has been held annually in the Spring since 1978. The details for the fundraiser are managed entirely by the 60-member Designer House Committee. The team works nearly year-round to ensure that the event is always a success.
Recently, HGTV’s hit show House Hunters came to Bucks to highlight an entrepreneurial couple looking to invest in some real estate. The episode will premiere on April 5th on HGTV. It was the first time the show had decided to highlight a couple interested in purchasing a property with the purpose of renting it out. Naturally, we were excited to know more, so we sat down to talk about the experience with the featured couple Lauren and Zack (L&Z).

Throughout the month of March, we are highlighting some of Buck County’s most Happening Women. This week’s featured Happening Woman is Pam Gifford. She co-owns Holland Floor Covering in Newtown. It’s a family-owned flooring company specializing in hardwood, carpet, tile, laminate, and vinyl finishes. We recently sat down with Pam to talk with her about her business and her inspirations.

When it comes to decorating a room for your baby or child, the possibilities are endless. Stimulating colors, wall art, soothing designs, and contemporary themes are just some of the things you’ll consider, along with furniture.
One of the biggest purchases you’ll make will be a crib or bed. It’s important to consider the safety of the furniture you are buying. Here are some things to consider before purchasing children’s furniture for your child’s room.
Cribs
Most parents believe that the crib is one place where they can leave their baby unattended for short periods of time without worry. However, if you buy an unsafe crib, you are putting your baby at risk for serious injury. (more…)
Considering the snow and ice we experienced the past two winters, 2012 has treated us pretty well thus far (knock on wood). Take advantage of the mild weather by checking on the condition of your home’s exterior. Small projects like routine gutter maintenance can prevent bigger (and costly) problems in the future.
A gutter problem isn’t just a gutter problem. It’s a problem for your entire property. If left unmaintained, the ground around your house gets saturated, which creates a breeding ground for mold and mildew that eats away at your home’s foundation and the basement walls. Cracks and leaks may develop, which worsen quickly in the winter due to the ground freezing and expanding. Water damage can destroy entire homes.
Don’t let these issues become your issues. Tackle these common gutter problems this weekend: (more…)
Much of the beauty of Bucks County can be attributed to the historic houses across our region. Those lucky enough to live in one of these homes are surrounded by unique, detailed craftsmanship that cannot be found in new construction.
When you purchase a new construction home, often you can find the details repeated in other houses all over town. Often the finer details have been overlooked in favor of cost and efficiency.
Fortunately, when it comes to your home, it’s never “take it or leave it.” What you do with your home is completely up to you.
Take your railings, for example. Most houses, new construction or not, have plain builder-grade railings.
Functional? Sure.
Interesting? Absolutely not. (more…)
