As allergy season, er…Spring arrives in Bucks County, flowers bloom, trees blossom, and I sneeze and attempt to relieve watery eyes. Because of my seasonal affliction, it’s nice to participate in indoor activities during the peak of the season. I recall in late spring a while back, I went on a first date at the comedy club in Doylestown at Pocos. Isn’t laughter the best medicine?

I was a little curious about Poco’s Comedy Cabaret, as I’d never been. My date had bought tickets and we were ushered upstairs upon arrival where there is a small stage and long tables and chairs set up right near it. It’s a little daunting at first, especially when you’re on a date with someone you barely know. Needless to say, I finished the beer rather fast and ordered another.

The show soon began. It was a very small crowd, but a seemingly enthusiastic one. The main enthusiastic participant being my date who was heckling in a friendly way and throwing out responses that also elicited laughter from the crowd. I soon realized that my date had no reservations about who he was and what he thought was funny. He certainly wasn’t holding back and he made the overall show more fun for everyone else with his comments and exchanges with the comedians.

Single in the Suburbs: Valentine’s Day Pep Talk

So it’s Valentine’s Day, and you’re single…or at least not in a serious relationship. My advice? Skip the pity party and focus on the positives!

For those in casual relationships, Valentine’s Day can lead to all sorts of unnecessary pressure; he will feel weird that he only got you a Starbucks gift card and you won’t be able to stop thinking about the endless stream of engagement & wedding pictures in your Facebook news feed. I’ve made the mistake of going out on Valentine’s Day with a non-committal “boyfriend” who eventually dumped me, leaving nothing behind but a whole lot of headaches.

Then there’s the girl’s night out “we love being single” approach, which I tried in Philly another year. While we had a marvelous time at a Stupid Cupid party, I couldn’t help feeling a pit inside at the end of the night. (more…)

Single in the Suburbs: The Perfect Second Date

Are you starting the year with a “brand new you” like I always tell myself I’m going to do and then forget about by this time? Don’t worry, I’m not going to post any tips on resolutions or what you should do to change yourself. I’m sure you’ve read enough of that by now. What I’m really excited about for 2012 is the movie line-up. After receiving my weekly email from the County Theater in Doylestown, I’ve become very excited for the upcoming films – The Artist, The Iron Lady, Melancholia among many more! (Also, The Dark Knight Rises in the summer!!!)

This got me thinking about one of my favorite movie dates. It was with a Princeton grad and we saw Black Swan, which was excellent, in my opinion. (more…)

It’s crunch time! Everyone running around last minute, trying to get gifts that say you care, but usually just settling for a gift card. Okay, well, maybe that’s just me. What about the person you’re dating? Dating during the holidays can be confusing, especially if you’re single and “kinda seeing” a guy. Do I get him something? We’ve gone out more than 3 times now. We text a lot. Will he get me something? What if I get something and he doesn’t? Will I look desperate??

So you’re at a point where you’ve followed my musings and advice thus far throughout the year and now you’re “kinda seeing someone,” but it’s “nothing official.” It’s like an awkward in between phase. For the holidays, I’m the type of person that likes to spread Christmas cheer to all (or Hannukah cheer, Kwanzaa cheer; point is, I like to spread cheer). So my recommendation for the awkward “kinda dating” someone gift is to keep it simple! (more…)

Single in the Suburbs: What His Halloween Costume Says About Him

Halloween is quickly approaching, which means time is ticking to find the perfect costume! For singles, choosing the right Halloween costume can make or break an evening.

Will my costume stand out in a crowd? Start a fun conversation? Give me an excuse to break out a fake accent?

For girls, it’s pretty straight forward. I can’t help but think about that Mean Girls quote by Cady Heron, the movie’s protagonist:

“Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.”

I won’t even pretend like I haven’t jumped on this bandwagon.  (more…)

Single in the Suburbs: 5 Ways Fall Will Improve the Bucks County Dating Scene

It was just another Friday night out when as I was standing at the bar – it happened. A boy bought me a drink. He ordered, I ordered, he says, “Just put it on my card,” to the bartender and Voila! Free glass of wine! I couldn’t believe it! Not only does this not happen too often when I go out in Bucks County, but it happened so fast!

Okay, maybe it was the slightly revealing LBD or the fact that I complimented his Mario shirt (I know, but I like Mario!), but I know what it really was. It was the “end of summer.” (more…)

Single in the Suburbs: An Online Dating Adventure

Bucks is a big county. There’s a lot to cover and it takes over well over an hour to get from one end to the other. Thousands and thousands live here, therefore there must be boys I haven’t met!!  How do I meet them when I’m usually not around the rest of the area much?

“You should just try it,” a friend told me, “It’s free! What have you got to lose?” Free? I can only imagine the types of people on there…

“Just do it – at least for fun!” Ok, ok. You convinced me. I’ll fill out this online dating profile and see who else, equally as crazy as me, has completed one. In all honestly, I secretly love filling out profiles about myself. As terrible as it comes across, talking about my likes and dislikes is fun and one of the easiest things for me to do! Here goes nothing… (more…)
