If you have lived in Bucks County for any amount of time, you may know that we have a number of great resources available to help us make healthy choices and stay fit. One such resource, The Cornerstone Clubs, recently saw an opportunity to give back and proved that great things can be done with the help of a supportive community.

As fans of great architecture, we are always excited to check out local designers. Bucks County has an amazing variety of great homes and gardens. If you’ve lived here for any number of years, you may have heard about something called the Bucks County Designer House & Gardens. Interested in architecture or interior/landscape design? — You will definitely want to know more about this great initiative! (We went to the Designer House last year and it was absolutely incredible.)
The Bucks County Designer House & Gardens is a non-profit fundraiser run by Village Improvement Association of Doylestown (V.I.A) to support the Doylestown Hospital and V.I.A. Community Projects (According to their website, the V.I.A. is the only women’s club in the country to own and operate a community hospital). The first Designer House was shown in 1971, and the event has been held annually in the Spring since 1978. The details for the fundraiser are managed entirely by the 60-member Designer House Committee. The team works nearly year-round to ensure that the event is always a success.
On Saturday April 14th, 2012 at 6:00 PM, The Board of Associates of Fox Chase Cancer Center (Bucks County Chapter) will host their annual fundraising event. Though many states were already observing the occasion, President Jimmy Carter officially declared the first week in March to be “Women’s History Week” in 1980. Since then, the observance has grown and March has become known as “Women’s History Month.” We feel that this month provides a great opportunity to learn more about the women that have made great contributions to our country throughout history. To celebrate the occasion, we’re taking time to highlight some of the most happening women (past and present) in Bucks County. There have been a number of women who have helped to make our county a great place to live and work and we want to say “Thanks.”
Pearl S. BuckOriginally from Hillsboro, West Virginia, Pearl S. Buck was a deeply influential writer/teacher during much of the 20th century.
Her novel The Good Earth was the best-selling fiction book in the U.S. in 1931 and 1932, and in 1932 she won the Pulitzer Prize. In 1938, she became the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, “for her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China and for her biographical masterpieces.”
She spent much of her early life teaching and writing in China, before eventually settling in Pennsylvania with her second husband. Buck was passionate and outspoken about a range of issues including women’s rights, Asian cultures, immigration, adoption, missionary work, and war. (more…)
John, Will, and Matt Harding and Katie and Christian Kirkpatrick are “Happening Kids” because they hold annual month-long charity drives. Every year the children select a charity to support. During their first drive in 2010, 800 books were collected for Reach Out and Read. These books were, in turn, distributed to children living in poverty at pediatric visits. In 2011, over 500 toys, books and craft items were collected for the Make a Wish Foundation. These items were given to children with severe medical illnesses. This year, the children are hoping to top the previous drives as they collect items for Cradles to Crayons. This organization collects essential items for babies and children, and distributes them through shelters, programs and schools that serve children who are homeless or living in poverty.
