OWowCow’s Holiday Flavors, Wrightstown & Ottsville:

It may sound cliche but there is a reason that people shout “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” in December. There is certainly no shortage of events to attend around Bucks. All month long, you can check out our 2011 holiday guide, continuous calendar of events, & restaurant guide for all the latest to-dos. To start, check out your weekend guide for December 1st – 4th 2011.
Love history? Then you’ll want to check out the Mercer Museum’s event on Thursday, Decemeber 1, 2011 called Straight Up, With a Twist: Prohibition Era from Philadelphia to Bucks County. From 7pm to 9pm, the group will explore the entertainment side of the Prohibition Era in the Philadelphia area.

Herman Mihalich, Pennsylvania Rye Whiskey Historian, will be on hand with samples of his whiskey from his new distillery, Mountain Laurel Spirits. Something about the holidays just makes us want to look at beautifully decorated old homes! Luckily, this weekend, there are many chances to do just that in Bucks County:
Doylestown

175 East Oakland Avenue, Doylestown
Begun in 1992, the annual tour has become a cherished Christmas tradition for the Central Bucks community. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church shares the proceeds of the House Tour & Boutique with the Bucks County Housing Group, to benefit the Doylestown homeless shelter in its battle against homelessness in Central Bucks. This year’s tour features borough homes in four distinctly different neighborhoods. They were built during a span of more than a century, and each has been renovated from its original floor plan. Ticket price includes admission to the four homes and Tea back at the parish hall. Advance tickets may be purchased for $20 through Thursday Dec. 1 at the church office at the corner of Pine St. and E. Oakland Ave., FX Dougherty, 64 S. Main St., or online at www.bchg.org. Tickets may be purchased on tour days for $25 at the parish hall 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 2 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 3.
The parish hall is also home to the Holiday Boutique, which opens one hour before the Tour begins. Admission to the Boutique is free. Offerings include fresh greens, Saint Paul’s famous boxed butter cookies, plain & fancy baked goods, raffles, and a Christmas Attic filled with bargains on gently used holiday decorations.
With the unseasonably warm temperatures we’ve been enjoying this October, it’s easy to forget that winter is just around the corner. However, whether we’re prepared or not, in just a couple months we’ll be bundled up in heavy winter coats preparing for the latest snow storm. For those devoted to eating healthy, local food, the cold temps can post quite a problem, limiting local produce options to root vegetables and storage crops.

Winter Sun Farms provides fresh, LOCAL produce all winter long
A new hand-crafted ice cream parlor has arrived in Wrightstown, just in time to deliciously cool us down in the July heat! While Upper Bucks has been enjoying OWowCow‘s sweet treats for a couple of years already at the initial Ottsville location, OWow’s latest Lower Bucks location only recently opened its doors on July 5th, 2011. Bucks Happening stopped in to get the (tasty) scoop!
All of OWowCow’s flavors are hand-crafted from the good stuff- locally sourced, organic ingredients made in small batches. Owners, John & Tina Fezzuoglio, are extremely passionate about the ingredients used in their premium ice creams. For example, Espresso Bean uses locally roasted coffee beans; Mint Chocolate Chip is made from organic mint grown at Peace Tree Farm in Kintnersville; and the fruit for Just Peachy is grown in Solebury. They’re committed to the preservation of local family farms, natural, sustainable food production and the conservation of Bucks County’s majestic beauty. (more…)

Pull together your locavore spirit, your DIY sensibilities, and a carload of friends and family and head to the The First Annual Smallholding Festival Saturday, July 9, 2011, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Linden Hill Gardens in beautiful Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
