On the 10th Day of Christmas, we celebrate the gift of “Lords-a-Leaping”. Why are they leaping you may ask? Most likely, it’s because of amazing deals they found in Bucks! Before the daily deals craze existed, there was Rice’s Market in Solebury, where deals happen every Tuesday & Saturday morning. Check out some amazing deals happening at Rice’s Market and follow their blog for all the latest: (more…)
Rice’s Market is a household name in Bucks County; just about every local has experienced the shopping mecca in Solebury Township at one point or another. What you may not realize, however, is just how far back Rice’s story begins. Like many of the most charming locations in Bucks County, Rice’s Market’s story starts long ago, over 150 years back.
The History of Rice’s Market
In the spring of 1860, Mr. A.L. Rice settled in Solebury Township, Pennsylvania, on a farm which is now the site of Rice’s Sale & Country Market. Rice auctioned his products, as well as his neighbors’ products, at various times during the year. As word of his success spread, farmers brought their cattle and farm products for Rice to offer for sale. By the 1950′s, a market was added to the Tuesday livestock auctions, and the rest is history. Rice’s Market quickly grew to over 500 vendors from throughout the Northeast area. (more…)

Locals have come to know & love New Hope’s Jamie Hollander over the years; first as an outstanding caterer and then as a specialty food market with scrumptious breakfast, lunch, and take-out selections including their Filet Mignon Cheesesteak; Southern Fried Chicken sandwich; and Barbequed Pulled Pork sandwich.
On Tuesday, December 6th, an intimate group gathered for a tasty evening at Jamie Hollander to celebrate their exciting new venture- their official BYOB dinner service opening! JH has transformed their low-key daytime seating area to create a welcome night-time decor. Bucks Happening was on hand to sample their amazing dinner menu, which will includes everything from a variety of wood-oven baked pizzas to pan-seared grass fed filet. With experiences under his belt like representing the U.S.A. in the Pan Am fencing tournament in Mexico and living in Finland for a month in an effort to inspire world peace, it’s hard to believe that Owen McKenna is just 11 years old.
Owen, a student at Germantown Academy and fencer at the Bucks County Academy of Fencing, is December’s “Happening Kid” of the month. We were honored to get the chance to ask him a few questions about his impressive experiences and aspirations for the future:
BH: What is your favorite subject?
OM: My favorite subject is history.
BH: How did you begin fencing & what do you like about it?
OM: When I was very little I loved movies about knights and sword fighting. When I found out there was sport with swords in it, I wanted to try it. I finally got to start fencing when I was 6. I love everything about fencing but especially that it is both a mental and physical sport. (more…)
